WHERE TO EAT IN SAN DIEGO

Let’s face it, one of the most commented things about travelling is the food. Is it good? Is it expensive? Is it exotic? Food can enhance any voyage, as well as ruin it.

To help you get the best (culinary) experience in San Diego, here is a list of the restaurants we recommend.

FOR BREAKFAST

Atypical Waffle Company, 30th Street.

Waffles for breakfast seems like your classic American dish… but not on this bohemian & chillaxed eatery. Of course you can find the typical sugared or Nutella & strawberry waffle, but when you keep reading the menu, the site’s name strikes you. Ingredients like brie & jam, salmon & cream cheese or bacon, avocado & goat cheese (YES!!) make this place a true gem for any foodie.

Be sure to check their opening & closing hours, they vary depending on the weekday. Monday’s closed.

FOR LUNCH

El Pescador Fish Market, La Jolla.

If you happen to be in La Jolla (which is totally worth it!) you can’t miss this local-recommended seafood restaurant. Couple of things we enjoyed about this place: a) the huge counter with different kinds of fresh fish and shellfish to see and select, and b) the long tables where you can sit & mingle with your neighbours and make new friends. As for the food, you can start with a clam chowder, followed by fish or shrimp tacos, tuna sashimi or (our favorite) smoked salmon sandwich.  Fresher fish you won’t find!

Check out the full menu here. Casual. Open from 11am to 9pm daily.

FOR DINNER

Basic Bar/Pizza, Downtown.

This industrial looking restaurant & bar is the perfect spot whether you fancy a nice dinner or just drinks with your friends. On one side there’s a bar area with pool tables and couches; on the other a more “formal” dinning area. Obviously pizza is the specialty, we recommend the J STREET (mozzarella, chicken, bacon, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto). The wine list is also quite extensive. Order size SMALL, it is more than enough for two very hungry people.

Don’t forget to bring your ID (they will ask to see it at the entrance, or at least they asked us). Open from 11:30am to 2:00am every day.

Oceana Coastal Kitchen, Mission Blvd.

If you’re into fancy bay-front dinning while admiring the sunset, this is the place for you. Inside Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa, this Diner’s Choice award winner restaurant serves a Californian cuisine made from local produce. Try the Gnocchi with sun-dried and fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, or (our favourite) the Two Duck risotto. Give a treat to your sweet tooth with the Chocolate Pistachio Cheesecake, it’s to die for.

FOR DESSERT

Bobboi Natural Gelato, La Jolla.

There is no better place to end a great meal or a great day than this gelateria. Serving home-made gelato, you can expect flavors that vary according to the availability of seasonal & local ingredients; you will have a hard time choosing just the one, so better get the 2 or 3 (!!) scoops. No regrets there!
